Walking in the Rainforest
We went to Bako National Park. This is a 40 minute car trip from Kuching then a 20 minute boat trip.
The National Park is well set up for tourists and there are many well maintained and marked trails for visitors. You can stay there overnight an option I might consider next year.
The Boat ride to the Park
The water was very clean and the villages were also free of visible rubbish. Having lived in Asia a while it is great to see an area where people keep it clean and rubbish free. No plastic bags floating in the water. Well done Sarawak!
The forest is on the esty=uary is mainly mangrove but a short distance from the water is very thick nearly impenetrable forest.
The park is well set up but definitely not crowded. Guides are available and the tracks are good but do require a level of fitness for the longer ones. The beach is nice and practically deserted.
There is a cafeteria with local food and it is also air conditioned. It is pretty hot and the cafeteria was very welcome.
Fortunately we did not see any. But it did make us stay out of the water. In fact the recommendation is that you do not go in the sea for a swim as people are attacked by crocodiles.
Walking in the Forest
This delightful looking creature is a viper snake. The guides freaked out when they saw it and said if it bites you then you have only 5 minutes to live.
They were ‘armed’ with long sticks and tried to move it. It was nearly invisible and was extremely dangerous because of that.
It certainly made us take more care on our walk.
There were quite a few monkeys on our walk. All of these are wild and are free to roam. There were also some very elusive wild pigs which were very hard to photograph. Bird life was nearly non-existent which was a surprise.
